They are plastic, metal, or resin artifacts whose function is to replace, totally or partially, a limb subjected to amputation. We currently have arm, hand, leg, hip, and foot prostheses, among others, whose main function is to replace the natural limb, covering the same physiological and morphological needs, restoring the mobility and aesthetics required for the patient to lead an independent normal life, improving their posture, balance, and self-esteem.

Regardless of the cause, an amputation means a great loss not only in terms of movement and independence, but also affects the patient psychologically, disrupting their lifestyle, confidence, and self-esteem, so after surgery, in addition to rehabilitation, an orthopedic prosthesis specifically designed to meet the patient’s individual needs is required, allowing it to recover the functionality of its original limb.

It is necessary to analyze several factors when selecting the optimal prosthesis, such as:

Weight, age, and height of the patient.
Patient’s lifestyle and motor needs.
Area and level of amputation.

Prostheses are classified into two types:

Stent: they are those installed through surgery and are permanent.
Exoprostheses: they are temporary devices that the patient can put on and take off when required.

In order to determine which is the ideal prosthesis for you, it is essential to correctly diagnose and know your specific needs, and from there, choose the materials and design that best suits you.

Correctly using an orthopedic prosthesis is not an easy task, it requires the support and advice of experts from various disciplines who teach us how to achieve it. Therefore, it is a joint effort of orthopedists, traumatologists, physical therapists, and psychologists, among other health professionals.
