What is hodgkin lymphoma?

It is a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, where the lymphocytes, which are the cells that defend the body from infections, affected by a mutation begin to multiply abnormally, with a tendency to spread rapidly.

Anyone can develop this condition, but its incidence is higher between the ages of 21 to 42 and 56 and older.

Hodgkin lymphoma is classified into:

Traditional or classic:

It is the most common class and abnormal cells called Reed-Sternberg are found in the lymphatic system, dividing into several types:

Lack of lymphocytes.
Lymphocyte predominance.
Nodular sclerosis.
Mixed cell.

Mostly lymphocytic:

It is a less frequent and aggressive type, in which cells called popcorn are affected due to their appearance. Affected patients have a better chance of recovery if diagnosed and treated early.

Signs and symptoms Hodgkin lymphoma

They are variable depending on the type of lymphoma and its degree of progress, but in general, the following symptoms are the most frequent:

High fever.
Excessive sweating.
Decreased body weight.
Itch.
Hypersensitivity to alcoholic beverages.
Swollen lymph nodes.
Tiredness.
Weakness.

Diagnosis and treatment Hodgkin lymphoma

Once your doctor analyzes your symptoms and clinical history, they will perform a physical examination to explore the lymph nodes to check for inflammation, in addition to requesting:

Blood tests.
X-rays.
Computed tomography.
Positron emission tomography (PET).
Lymph node biopsy.
Bone marrow biopsy.

Treatment will depend on your type of Hodgkin lymphoma, its stage of progression, and your general health conditions, but it usually focuses on suppressing the cancer cells through chemotherapy and radiation therapy, hematopoietic cell transplant, and immunotherapy.
