What is cervicitis?

26 September 2025

The term cervicitis refers to a common condition in which the cervix is inflamed, usually by a sexually transmitted disease, although it can also happen for non-infectious reasons.

The most frequent causes include:

  • Bacterial vaginosis.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals.
  • Recurrent sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, and human papillomavirus).
  • Allergic reactions caused by some feminine hygiene products, such as douches and vaginal deodorants, as well as spermicides or the latex in condoms.

Due to its nature, there are also multiple risk factors, such as:

  • Having a device inserted in the pelvic area (diaphragm or IUD).
  • History of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Having had sexual relations at a young age.
  • Having more than one sexual partner.
  • Having a new sexual partner.
  • Having a sexual partner who has sex with several other people.

Signs and symptoms Cervicitis

Sometimes, cervicitis does not present any symptoms. But if it does, the most common signs are:

  • Painful sexual intercourse.
  • Pain or discomfort during a pelvic exam.
  • Vaginal itching.
  • Abundant and constant vaginal discharge.
  • Frequent and painful urination.
  • Bleeding between menstrual periods.
  • Vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse.

If cervicitis is not detected in time, it can cause fertility problems and increase the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS from an infected sexual partner. Therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to see your doctor for a check-up and to have regular gynecological check-ups to detect any abnormalities.

Diagnosis Cervicitis

After learning about your symptoms and medical history, your doctor will perform a physical exam and a pelvic exam to see if the cervix is reddened and if there’s inflammation of the vaginal walls and cervical discharge.

They will also order a urine analysis and take a sample of your cervicouterine and vaginal fluid for laboratory testing. If they consider it necessary, they will also require tests to detect chlamydia and and gonorrhea.

Treatment Cervicitis

The treatment to follow will depend on the cause of the cervicitis. If it is due to a sexually transmitted disease, both you and your partner will need antibiotics. In the case of a herpes infection, your doctor will prescribe antivirals.

If the condition is due to an allergic reaction, you may not need any treatment, or maybe just anti-inflammatories.

In the case of women who are in the menopause stage, your doctor may suggest hormone therapy, either with estrogen or progesterone.

If symptoms continue even after treatment, you should have a test that allows your doctor to evaluate whether the bacteria is resistant to the administered antibiotics.
